Facilities inside the U.S. Embassy compound caught fire after the attack, with flames visible from outside the complex, according to the Interior Ministry source cited by Xinhua, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Sirens were activated across the site during the assault, while the embassy’s defense system did not intercept the incoming drones, the source said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties, and the blaze indicates material damage to facilities, the source told Xinhua. Further details were not immediately available.
The embassy was subjected to multiple rounds of attacks from Monday evening into the early hours of Tuesday, Xinhua reported.
Baghdad’s Green Zone houses Iraqi government buildings, the parliament and several foreign missions, including the U.S. Embassy. The heavily fortified area has been a frequent target of rocket and mortar fire in recent years.
