Early figures published soon after the April 10 ballot had already pointed to another overwhelming victory for the incumbent, with preliminary results showing him ahead on 97.81% of the vote against one opponent.

According to the official Djibouti News Agency, which cited the Constitutional Council, Guelleh collected 204,874 votes in total.

His only rival, Mohamed Farah Samatar, won 6,318 votes, or 2.99%.

Djibouti occupies a critical position on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the narrow waterway connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden and carrying a significant portion of trade between Asia and Western markets.

Home to just over one million people, the country has turned that location into a geopolitical asset, emerging as a major military and logistics center that hosts several foreign bases and anchors key global shipping routes.
