In a statement, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf described the proposal as “a timely and constructive contribution” to wider international efforts to reduce tensions and steer the region toward a political and diplomatic solution.
He said the initiative’s focus on “an immediate cessation of hostilities, the protection of civilians, respect for international humanitarian law, and the safeguarding of maritime security” captures the essential steps needed to contain the crisis.
Youssouf also expressed “deep concern” over the continued escalation across the Gulf and Middle East.
He noted that the fallout is already reaching far beyond the conflict zone, affecting global energy supply chains, food systems and economic stability — with Africa, in particular, facing the strain at a time when the continent is already dealing with multiple overlapping challenges.
Urging restraint, rapid de-escalation and sustained engagement, the AU Commission chief said all sides must fully comply with international law and the United Nations Charter in order to protect international peace and security.
“A durable resolution can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiated solutions,” he added, saying the AU stands ready to work with international and regional partners to support peace and stability in the region.
