the Court points to gaps in development assistance

In Paris, the Court of Auditors on Thursday morning delivered a report on France’s civilian and military actions in the G5 Sahel and their relationship to official development assistance. Conclusions: there are gaps in the monitoring of development assistance in the Sahel and security and development measures suffer from a lack of coordination

The figures from the UNDP, the UN’s development program, speak for themselves: the Sahel region is one of the most disadvantaged regions in the world with the highest fertility levels.

According to the Court of Auditors, however, there is no shortage of development aid. Expenditure in the G5 Sahel countries more than doubled between 2012 and 2018, from € 580 million to more than € 1.3 billion, amounts that have so far not made it possible to significantly improve. The everyday life of the population.

Theuncertainty, observe the wise men, still poses a major obstacle to the development of the G5 countries and to specify: there is no lasting security without economic, social and institutional development. Military action against armed groups is therefore not enough on its own to guarantee the conditions for a life of dignity for the peoples.

The Court therefore calls for this to be reflected in the organization of the French response and therefore requests a progress report on the Barkhane military operation, which France allocates one billion euros each year.
