Five years after Myanmar’s military seized power and placed Aung San Suu Kyi in detention, the United States is pressing the junta to free the ousted civilian leader without delay, even as authorities say she will be transferred to house arrest.
A senior source in her disbanded National League for Democracy (NLD) told AFP that she was expected to remain under arrest at a residence in the capital, Naypyidaw.

Min Aung Hlaing, the junta chief, overthrew Ms Suu Kyi’s elected government in 2021 and ordered her detention on a raft of charges that rights groups say were manufactured to push her from public life.
Since then, the Southeast Asian nation of about 50 million people has been engulfed in civil war, a conflict that has left thousands dead and forced millions from their homes.
“We continue to call for her immediate and unconditional release,” a US State Department spokesman said.
“We urge the regime to ensure Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has proper access to medical care given continued reports of her poor health.”
The office of Min Aung Hlaing on Wednesday released a photograph that appeared to show Ms Suu Kyi seated between two men — one wearing a khaki shirt and the other a police uniform.
