Switzerland Confident of Decimating Italy Following Strategic Formation Shift

Luciano Spalletti opted for a 4-3-3 lineup for Italy’s Euro 2024 clash with Switzerland. Unfortunately, this strategy led to a 2-0 defeat.

Swiss coach Murat Yakin was confident of victory over Italy in their last-16 encounter upon learning of Italy’s tactical switch.

Having edged past France in Euro 2020, the Swiss team has now reached the quarter-finals for the second time by defeating the reigning champions in Berlin.

Switzerland outperformed Italy across various metrics including shots, shots on target, expected goals, and penalty area touches.

Spalletti reverted to his preferred 4-3-3 formation, having previously used a 3-5-2 against Croatia. Post the Croatia match, which ended in a draw, Spalletti dismissed rumors that his players influenced the tactical change.

Yakin felt Italy’s tactical alteration played to Switzerland’s advantage. On Swiss Radio and Television he remarked, “When Italy lined up with four at the back, we knew we’d trample them. Then make them chase the game.”

Swiss player Ndoye effectively neutralized Italian forward El Shaarawy, limiting his impact on the game.

Switzerland now prepares for their quarter-final bout against either England or Slovakia next Saturday, aiming to make a historic semi-final appearance.

Yakin expressed no preference between England or Slovakia saying, “The supporters might have a favorite, but for us, every game is decisive.”

England and Slovakia will face off tomorrow, with the English team striving to make consecutive quarter-final appearances in the Euros for the first time.
