Billy Gilmour for Norwich Medical

Norwich City are approaching the conclusion of a loan deal for Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour with a medical set-up that will take place on Thursday.

The 20-year-old has seen his playing time evaporate since Thomas Tuchel arrived at Stamford Bridge, and the German coach clearly does not believe that the midfielder will play an important role in his plans for next season.

Chelsea are willing to let Gilmour leave on loan, and Norwich appear to be his next short-term goal. John Percy reports that Starlet is closer than ever to joining the Canary Islands, and has a medical scheduled for Thursday when he is allowed to leave isolation after testing positive for Covid-19.

The Blues are keen to see their youth continue to grow in the Premier League, and they see Norwich as the best club to help him flourish and unleash his true potential. This is due to Norwich’s attractive style of play under coach Daniel Farke, who has guided his team back into the Premier League on the first question and has worked with Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund.

Norwich suffered a disappointing top campaign in 2019/20 and finished the bottom of the season with only 21 points. But the Canary Islands adhered to their boss and his principles, and their faith was rewarded with style.

They stormed to the championship title last year, a total of 97 points and played wonderful football along the way. Their insistence on doing things in a specific way is what Chelsea find so appealing, and they believe that consistency and style will help their midfielder develop.

There was also interest from Rangers, where Gilmour began his career, but Chelsea’s preference is to keep an eye on their star in the Premier League.

Gilmour captured Europe’s attention at Euro 2020 and delivered a man from the match performance in the 0-0 draw against England at Wembley Stadium and demonstrated his true capacity on the big stage.

However, his tournament ended prematurely when he tested positive for coronavirus after the draw, which means he could not take part in the last group stage draw with Croatia. His absence was felt a lot when Scotland fell to a 3-1 defeat at Hampden Park and crashed out of Euro 2020.
