the legal professionals for the opponents of the UFDG detained

The lawyers for the opponents of the UFDG accused of “manufacturing and possessing weapons of war and attacks on the fundamental interests of the nation”, this week seized the ECOWAS court.

The lawyers for the detained members of the Union of Democratic Forces in Guinea are asking this sub-regional court to rule on a procedure which they consider to be flawed: violation of the presumption of innocence, violation of the right to defense, lack of visibility of the legal calendar in this case and in particular the poor health of the opponents, some of whom are affected by Covid-19.

“We ask the Court to assess the situation as a matter of urgency,” explained Me Ivan Terel, one of the opponents’ lawyers. On the one hand, due to the seriousness of the violation of their rights, which leads them to be detained for more than 4 months without any real prospects or legal calendar. The second reason for the emergency is our strong concern for their health. After 4 months of detention in the middle of the Covid period, they are kept in a detention center that has been hit hard by several cases of Covid. ”

“Their own health” also worries their lawyers, “including Mr Ibrahima ChérifBah, a 73-year-old man whose health is of particular concern to us. We know there is a real Covid problem inside this detention center. “The length of this detention is also another worrying factor for me Ivan Terel.” More than 4 months detention is inevitably very difficult. And even harder in this center, which we know is also affected by a problem of overpopulation. “

The Ministry of Justice ensures that opponents with coronavirus “are taken care of and treated”. A screening operation for the other detainees was launched last week.
