The second round of presidential elections is postponed again in São Tome and Principe. On Tuesday, Parliament voted in the small archipelago in the Gulf of Guinea on an “emergency law” for the vote to take place on 5 September. The Electoral Commission had already postponed the second round of presidential elections to August 29, while it was originally scheduled to take place on August 8, following allegations of fraud in the first round.
The law passed by parliament now provides for the second round of presidential elections on 5 September. The problem is that the president’s term will end on September 3, which is two days before. In the event of a vacancy in power, the law is not formal, but the Speaker of the Riksdag can take the opportunity.
“But Parliament’s President Delfim Neves was a presidential candidate. He failed and came third. And he is who disputed the results of the first round of voting, ”recalls political analyst Oliveo Diogo, which led to the second round being postponed. Delfim Neves also rejected the idea of a vote to extend the incumbent president’s term until the election process is complete.
