Renowned Somali Parliament Speaker, Prof. Mohamed Osman Jawari, Passes Away at 79

Mogadishu (AX) – Former Somali Parliament Speaker, Prof. Mohamed Osman Jawari, succumbed to illness in Mogadishu on Friday afternoon, according to his kin and companions.

Hussein Sheikh Mohamud, the Somali President’s Adviser on Constitutional Affairs, divulged the passing of the stalwart Somali politician and historian on Somali National Television.

Prof. Jawari, hailing from Afgoye district in the Lower Shabelle region, was born in 1945. Though an Afgoye native, his registration was in Burhakaba within the Bay region. An alumnus of Somali National University, Jawari was specialized in Islamic Sharia and Comprehensive Law.

He held a ministerial position during Siad Barre’s regime, the last governing body to manage the entire nation before its fall in 1991.

Professionally a jurist, Prof. Jawari also had stints with the UN and as an academic in Norway. Since 1960, he had a hand in crafting several Somali constitutions.
