Ethiopia Issues Warning About ‘Longstanding Adversaries’ as Egypt Prepares to Send Troops to Somalia
Ethiopia Signals Vigilance Amid Egyptian Military Moves in Somalia
ADDIS ABABA – The head of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, has declared that Ethiopia stands ready to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity from any external threats.
In a recent address, General Jula accused Somali leaders of conspiring with foreign elements that have historically opposed Ethiopia. While he refrained from naming specific entities, there’s a growing suspicion around Somalia’s budding defense partnership with Egypt.
During the 47th anniversary of the Eastern Command held in the Somali region, Jula underscored Ethiopia’s resolve to confront any adversaries that jeopardize its security. Troops have already been strategically positioned along the border with Somalia in anticipation of potential conflicts.
He specifically highlighted “historical enemies” intent on stymieing Ethiopia’s development, bolstered by internal mercenaries and turncoats. The ongoing tensions with Egypt stem from disagreements over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a project that has become a focal point of regional contention.
Field Marshal Jula affirmed that the Ethiopian military remains devoted to fostering regional peace. Although Ethiopia actively participates in the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), it seems Somalia won’t allow their involvement in forthcoming missions.
Tensions have surged recently, particularly after Ethiopia inked an agreement with Somaliland, granting it a 20-kilometer stretch of the Red Sea coast for a military base and port. In return, North Western of Somaliagains recognition as a sovereign entity, infuriating the Somali leadership.
In light of these developments, Somalia has turned to Egypt, seeking protection for its maritime interests. Egypt has already dispatched troops to Somalia with plans to enhance local military capabilities through training in aerial and naval warfare as part of their defense arrangement.
The flow of arms to Somalia has drawn sharp criticism from Ethiopia, which perceives Egypt as having “crossed the red line.” This cooperative effort between Somalia and Egypt is regarded as a significant threat, especially in light of Egypt’s apprehensions surrounding Ethiopia’s dam projects on the Nile.
