Ethiopia and South Sudan Embark on Ambitious 220-Kilometer Cross-Border Road Project

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopic and South Sudan are gearing up to pave a 220-kilometer border-crossing road after securing a whopping $738 million agreement in May 2023.

This Tuesday, South Sudan’s Transitional National Legislative Assembly gave the thumbs-up to the cooperative financial plan with Ethiopia for developing the frontier highway, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed in a Thursday statement.

The ministry highlighted that the project is designed to boost connectivity and spur economic growth between the neighboring nations, reflecting the budding collaboration and mutually rewarding rapport between Ethiopia and South Sudan.

According to the pact, Ethiopia will foot the bill for the road endeavor, defining South Sudan as the borrower and Ethiopia as the greenback sponsor. Repayment will be settled in crude oil traded from South Sudan to Ethiopia.

Once President Salva Kiir of South Sudan gives the green light, construction will commence.

The South Sudanese stretch will link Paloich, Maiwut, and Pagak to Ethiopian border locales.
