Djibouti and Egypt Reach Accord to Construct Solar Energy Facility

Mogadishu (AX) — In a significant leap towards energy autonomy, Djibouti and Egypt have inked a pivotal agreement to establish a 276.5-kilowatt solar powerhouse in Djibouti. This pact, forged in a virtual meet-and-greet, is set to elevate Djibouti’s quest for energy independence while also mending the ties between these two nations.

On a day abuzz with ceremony, the Egyptian honcho of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Essmat, along with Djibouti’s power maestro, Yonis Ali Guled, put pen to paper in Egypt on Wednesday, making things official. Whoop whoop!

The capital’s new solar gem will be entirely funded and crafted with Egyptian expertise.

“This landmark deal showcases the strengthening of our alliance,” Essmat shared with a nod of enthusiasm, underscoring Egypt’s promise to bolster Djibouti’s energy dreams and development aspirations.

Showering praise on the collaboration, Minister Guled highlighted the solar project’s mighty role in ramping up Djibouti’s infrastructure, especially in schools and hospitals. He also noted the economic boons and trade perks that would ripple across the region.

This deal comes hot on the heels of a successful Egyptian-backed crash course for Djibouti’s energy folks. How neat is that?

Such projects, like the solar venture, are reinforcing Djibouti’s renewable journey that kicked off with the grand opening of their inaugural wind power marvel in 2022, marking a trailblazing move towards energy freedom. By steadily expanding its green energy portfolio, Djibouti can finally cut the cord of electricity imports from Ethiopia and inch closer to energy self-reliance.

Boasting grandiose aims, Djibouti is gunning for a 100% renewable energy portfolio by 2035. With stars in his eyes, Guled declared, “We’re brimming with confidence in our homegrown energy potential,” he chirped during the event. “This venture is a big leap in making that dream reality.”
