Despite notable gains against Ebola in parts of East and Central Africa, the virus is still spreading faster than the response, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has warned, underscoring an urgent need to accelerate containment in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and sustain progress in Uganda.
Africa CDC official Wessam Mankoula said laboratory capacity has been scaled up to more than 2,000 tests per day, clinical trials for Ebola treatments are underway, and Uganda has largely kept its outbreak in check through rapid case finding and rigorous contact tracing. Even so, DR Congo has reported 1,759 confirmed infections and 600 deaths, highlighting the continuing toll.
Treatment centres are nearing their limits and persistent insecurity is disrupting operations, Mankoula noted, prompting renewed calls for additional resources, tighter surveillance, and expanded treatment capacity to match the pace of transmission.
