Ebola outbreak leaves more than 130 children orphaned in eastern DR Congo

Sounding the alarm, the World Health Organization says the Ebola outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo strain in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is still gathering pace.

At least 1,561 cases have been confirmed, with 506 deaths. More than 10,000 contacts are being monitored. Health officials warn the full extent of the crisis remains uncertain as treatment centres are overwhelmed and response work is hindered by conflict, mass displacement and limited resources.

Even so, testing capacity has risen sharply through decentralised laboratories, and a clinical trial is under way to assess two potential treatments, MBP134 and remdesivir, for the Bundibugyo strain, which currently has no approved cure.
