The hunt for a fugitive linked to a high-profile bombing in Monaco ended thousands of miles away, Ukrainian prosecutors said — with the prime suspect found shot dead in Ukraine.
A Ukrainian woman suspected of a bomb attack that targeted a wealthy Ukrainian-born businessman in Monaco was found shot dead in Ukraine, Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office said.
In a statement, prosecutors said they also detained an employee of Ukraine’s military intelligence service (HUR), who said he killed the woman together with another suspect.
Prosecutors identified the woman as Anastasiia Berezovska, 39, describing her as the lead suspect listed in an Interpol Red Notice. The notice said she was Ukrainian, spoke German and was sought by Monaco’s authorities on allegations including attempted murder, placing an explosive device in a public place with criminal intent, and criminal conspiracy.
Three people were wounded in the blast on 29 June
Details of the escape route have also emerged in Monaco. The principality’s deputy prosecutor said last week the attacker left Monaco on foot into nearby France before fleeing by car to Germany, traveling through several European countries on the way, including Italy.
The intended target of the attack, Mr Yermolaiev, was granted Cypriot nationality in 2019 and was placed under Ukrainian sanctions in 2023.
Ukrainian media reported the sanctions were imposed for doing business in Russian-occupied Crimea.
