Somalia Carries Out Execution of Three al-Shabaab Militants Following Conviction for Fatal Assaults
MOGADISHU, Somalia – On Thursday, three al-Shabaab members faced execution after a military court found them culpable in attacks that have plunged Somalia into turmoil. These jihadists were not mere foot soldiers; they orchestrated chaos, leaving a trail of devastation in the Horn of Africa.
Court records unearthed grave charges: these individuals plotted assassinations and bombings in Mogadishu, claiming lives, including valiant military personnel. Their violent acts spilled over into the embattled Lower Shabelle region, a hotbed of conflict between the Somali National Army (SNA), the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), and the insurgents.
Named in the verdict were Abukar Ahmed Mohamed, Hamse Jeylani Abdullahi “Abtiga,” and Hassan Ali Hussein “Garaad.” The court matched their presence to several grisly crime scenes, culminating in Thursday’s fateful executions.
This event marks the sixth execution of al-Shabaab operatives in August 2025, spotlighting the judicial system’s crucial role in combating these militants, affirming the rights of the accused to a fair trial.
Just a week earlier, Somali officials reported the execution of three men for the killings of security personnel, a civil servant, an army medic, and two civilians in separate incidents in Mogadishu and Afgoye.
The executed trio included Abdi Hassan Roble, known for his lethal grenade throws; Ibrahim Omar Haji Sham’un, a cunning surveillance agent; and Qudama Hamze Yusuf, a member of al-Shabaab’s Ightiyalat in the Banadir region.
Convictions came at different times: Qudama in January 2023, with the others sentenced in 2022. Somalia continues its relentless battle against al-Shabaab through military force, financial clampdowns, and rigorous court proceedings.
