QANSAHDHERE, Somalia — Heavy fighting broke out early Saturday in and around the Bay region district of Qansahdhere, as fighters styling themselves the South West Liberation Front clashed with regional security forces loyal to President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen.

Residents reported several hours of intense combat, with both heavy and light weapons rattling the town before dawn and through the morning. While casualty figures remain unconfirmed, local sources said the exchange resulted in deaths and injuries on both sides.
Preliminary reports from the ground indicate that opposition-aligned forces seized control of the town following the multi-hour engagement. Neither the South West State administration nor the opposition leadership issued an immediate statement on the reported change in control, and Axadle Times could not independently verify the status of key government facilities.
The situation remains highly volatile. Shops and markets were shuttered as gunfire rang out, public transport halted, and families in hard-hit neighborhoods began to flee to safer areas on the town’s outskirts, according to residents.
The outbreak follows days of heightened military maneuvers in Bay region by opposition groups seeking to challenge South West State’s current leadership. The latest clash underscores the fragility of local security and the risk of a broader escalation if rival forces consolidate parallel chains of command in strategic districts.
