Mogadishu (AX) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud hosted St. Louis Park Mayor Nadia Mohamed at the presidential palace on Saturday, during the mayor’s official visit to Somalia.
The discussion centered on mobilizing the Somali diaspora for national development and expanding ties between Somalia and the United States.
Hassan Sheikh praised Mohamed for her leadership and engagement in American politics, saying her rise underscores the influence and promise of Somalis on the global stage.
The president urged the mayor to keep backing initiatives that deepen Somalia-U.S. cooperation, highlighting opportunities in investment, social services and rebuilding efforts.
Mohamed expressed gratitude for the reception and reiterated her commitment to bolstering partnerships and supporting Somalia’s development programs.
In a statement issued by the presidency, Mohamed said she was struck by visible improvements in security and development during her visit to Mogadishu.
Mohamed — the first Somali, Muslim and Black woman elected mayor of St. Louis Park, Minnesota — said her election marks progress and mirrors the expanding presence of Somalis in leadership, civic service and political life internationally.
Her trip arrives as Somalia continues to spotlight the diaspora’s role in politics, development and public service abroad.
