Somali Parliamentary Speaker Rejects Impeachment Motion Against President, Lawmaker Says

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s lower house speaker has blocked an impeachment bid against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, according to a lawmaker who said the effort had the backing of more than 120 parliamentarians.

Dahir Amin Jesow, a member of the House of the People, said Aden Mohamed Nur, better known as Aadan Madoobe, refused to receive the motion calling for the president’s removal.

Jesow said the proposal, submitted by a group of lawmakers, contained “serious accusations” against Mohamud, but was not sent through the legal process normally required for such a step. He said the speaker turned it away, citing political concerns.

According to Jesow, Aadan Madoobe warned that allowing the motion to move forward could set off a direct clash with the president. The lawmaker added that the speaker also referred to tensions surrounding the South West State, saying he could not open a new political battle while disputes tied to that region remained unresolved.

Jesow further claimed the speaker is facing pressure because of political disagreements in South West State, and that those disputes are shaping parliamentary decisions.

There was no immediate comment from the speaker’s office or the presidency.
