Somalia’s Government Encouraged to Support Northeastern State’s Battle Against Al-Shabaab and ISIS
MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia should consider aligning with Northeastern State’s approach in tackling terrorism, suggested former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo. He praised the notable achievements of the region in combating these threats, dubbing it ‘exceptional’.
Despite limited financial backing from Mogadishu, Northeastern State has severed its affiliation with the federal administration, charting its own course to tackle Al-Shabaab and ISIS. Its security is notably improved compared to other states within the country.
Farmajo lauded the Northeastern State security forces for their proactive measures against extremists, highlighting their efforts as a critical component in the nation’s ongoing struggle for peace.
He urged the Federal Government to throw its weight behind Northeastern State’s efforts to uproot Al-Shabaab and ISIS, stressing the urgent threat these entities pose to the country’s stability and independence.
On Monday, a coalition of Northeastern State defense personnel and local citizens launched a mission targeting Al-Shabaab and ISIS in Bari’s rugged terrain. This initiative came after clan militias committed to cooperate with regional forces to extinguish the militant threat.
Reports from the Bari region revealed that the troops, traveling in formidable battle wagons, progressed nearly 200 kilometers towards Timirsh, keen on seizing the militants’ last bastions.
In a recent encounter, around ten IS-Somalia militants, some of whom were foreign combatants, met their end after an attempted attack on a Northeastern State military base. The American warnings have spotlighted the group’s heightened threat level, given their nest in the east of the state.
The U.S. has cautioned that unchecked, ISIS might expand their strongholds. They have managed to gather resources and attract foreign fighters, eager to stretch their reach, flaunting a rich armory.
President Said Abdullahi Deni consistently motivates local recruits to exhibit courage and perseverance in the face of Al-Shabaab and IS-Somalia’s growing menace. Northeastern State stands as a beacon of comparative tranquility amidst Somalia’s storm, showcasing signs of budding economic prosperity.
