Somali Forces Intensify Joint Operations Against Al-Shabaab in Southern Region

KISMAYO, Somalia, June 17 – Somalia’s southern Jubaland region is seeing an escalation in the fight against Al-Shabaab, as regional and federal forces press ahead with coordinated military offensives, officials said.

In the Dhasheeg-Waamo area of Lower Juba, Jubaland security forces and the Somali National Army are conducting joint operations aimed at militant camps and supply points that officials say have been used to organize attacks.

Jubaland authorities said the campaign combines ground advances with airstrikes designed to break up insurgent strongholds. The regional administration also said troops recovered weapons and military supplies during the ongoing operations.

Military commanders said the push will continue until Al-Shabaab fighters are driven from the remaining areas where they still operate in Jubaland.

Jubaland Information Minister Abdifatah Mohamed Mukhtar commended the troops involved, calling their work essential to restoring security and stability across the region.

He said the latest progress demonstrated the strength and coordination of the security forces, and urged them to keep up the pressure on the militant group until durable peace is secured and Al-Shabaab is fully expelled from Jubaland territories.

Al-Shabaab, which has been fighting the Somali government for more than 15 years, continues to launch attacks in parts of southern and central Somalia despite sustained military pressure from Somali and allied forces.
