interruption of the march at the call of the Wakit Tama Coalition

The opposition’s Wakit Tama coalition once again called for taking to the streets of the Chadian capital on Saturday morning, August 21, to challenge the military’s handling of the transition. A request had been submitted to the authorities, but the authorities only approved the march for three organizations that had officially signed the request. This created some uncertainty, and the opposition ended up canceling the rally.

The Hamama roundabout in N’Djamena was almost empty this Saturday morning. That was the starting point for this announced demonstration. Only a few people gathered early in the morning, but they were actually people who had not yet heard of the information.

It must be said that Wakit Tama met late, Friday night, to finally make the decision to withdraw his call to parade. “We do not want to get into the plan of the Transitional Military Council,” the spokesman for the opposition coalition said before adding: “We do not want to march in scattered order.”

The Chadian authorities had indeed validated the march, but only for three organizations: the same organizations that had signed this request for permission. For lack of doing the same, the other members of Wakit Tama were therefore not allowed to demonstrate this Saturday.

Wakit Tama not recognized by the government “We do not recognize Wakit Tama as a unit”, explains government spokesman Abderaman Koulamallah, who claims to have negotiated until 16:00 on Friday with opponents. According to him, “they wanted to go to the clash. It is unacceptable in these times of transition. We are transparent.”

Max Loalngar, for his part, upholds Wakit Tama’s will: “The next march will be made with or without permission.” The coalition spokesperson does not specify a date.
