Federal Delegation Arrives in Baidoa to Oversee Transition After Laftagareen’s Resignation

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Federal officials landed in Baidoa on Tuesday afternoon as Mogadishu moved to take charge of a political handover in South West State, one day after regional president Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen announced his resignation.

The delegation, which included the ministers of interior, foreign affairs and religious affairs, along with Lower House speaker Sheikh Aden Madobe, arrived at Shaati Gaduud airport in Baidoa. For some of the officials, the trip marked a return to the city after years away, following a lengthy political standoff with Laftagareen, who led Southwest State for seven years.

Even before the flight from Mogadishu, the federal side faced disagreement over who should steer the interim arrangement. Some argued that Laftagareen’s finance minister should remain in place during the transition, while others pushed for authority to be transferred to the former deputy speaker of the regional parliament.

In the end, the parties settled on Somalia’s second deputy prime minister, Jibriil Adirashiid Haji Abdi, to lead the transitional process and oversee the administration in South West State.
