Senior clan elders chose Abdijamal in a consensus meeting, pointing to his long record of service in community mediation and conflict resolution. Those involved in the selection described him as a figure known for fairness, seasoned in settling disputes, and deeply committed to cultural values as well as community development.
Speaking at the inauguration, Abdijamal underscored the importance of unity among clan members, particularly in regions historically affected by inter-clan tensions.
“The role of a chieftain is not ceremonial,” he said. “It requires dedication, impartiality and a deep understanding of our social fabric. I pledge to serve all members of the clan fairly and resolve disputes before they escalate.”
Attendees said they were encouraged that his appointment could help reinforce inter-clan ties and contribute to greater stability. Politicians present emphasized that effective traditional leadership remains a pillar for peace and governance across Hawadle communities, especially at times when local cohesion can shape broader security and political outcomes.
Across Somalia, traditional elders continue to occupy a central place in social and political life as custodians of customary law (xeer). They are frequently called upon to mediate disputes, help broker peace agreements and advocate for community interests in both national and local governance. Their standing often connects grassroots communities to formal state institutions, supporting social cohesion and stability.
