For those trying to lose weight, Costco is an excellent resource if you know what to buy. “To lose weight, you need to be in a deficit. Calories from our food are only one component of this equation, but the foods that help the most with weight loss usually have four things in common,” explains Lindsay Ogden, a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach at Lifetime. The criteria? Foods need to be high in protein, high in fiber, high in volume (low calorie for the amount of food), and low in added sugar, “which means less palatable and not as likely to overeat,” she states. “These factors help keep you full longer, reduce cravings, and make it easier to stay in a calorie deficit without feeling deprived.” Here are seven recommended foods that Ogden suggests stocking up on at Costco.
Frozen Vegetables
The first item to consider is frozen vegetables, including green beans and broccoli. “They’re high in volume and low in calories. They also have fiber, which helps you feel fuller longer,” Ogden advises. These are also perfect to pair with your choice of protein.
Frozen Mixed Berries

Next, Ogden recommends frozen berry blends, which can serve as a snack, be blended into smoothies, or added to yogurt bowls. “High in fiber and antioxidants, plus they’re naturally sweet to help with cravings. Frozen (over fresh) also helps reduce food waste,” she explains.
Kirkland Signature Greek Yogurt

Ogden considers Kirkland Signature Greek Yogurt to be a staple. “It has 18g of protein per serving and is very versatile (can be used for savory or sweet flavor profiles),” she mentions. Note that it is not sweetened, so adding honey, fruit, or another sweetener is necessary.
Eggs

Eggs are also recommended as a staple in your weight loss diet. Ogden suggests buying egg whites or hard-boiled eggs at Costco. “An easy way to add more protein (without added fat) is by adding egg whites or just eating the whites from the hard-boiled eggs,” she adds. “Hard-boiled eggs are also great for breakfast or a snack on the go.”
Chicken Breast

Fresh or frozen chicken breast is another lean protein option available at Costco. “One of the leanest protein options out there,” Ogden states. “With summer around the corner, these are great on the grill!”
Mini Pack Avocado Mash or Guacamole

Mini packs of mashed avocado or guacamole are a great snack, providing omega-3s and healthy fats to help you feel full. “Great options for healthy fats and fiber while being pre-portioned to prevent overeating,” Ogden points out.
Mixed Greens or Power Greens

Mixed greens or power greens are easy-to-consume additions to your diet available in bulk at Costco. “I almost always have a packet of these on hand to throw in with meals that lack volume (being able to eat more with fewer calories),” Ogden states.
