At about 8.35pm (1.35 am Sunday Irish time), guests at the Washington Hilton dinner ducked for cover after shots rang out, according to video footage. Within moments, Secret Service agents moved swiftly towards Mr Trump and escorted the president and his cabinet out of the ballroom.
Officials later said a lone gunman had stormed a Secret Service checkpoint in one of the hotel lobbies, according to Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser and interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll.
Mr Carroll said the suspect charged the Secret Service checkpoint in the hotel’s lobby area while carrying a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives. Secret Service personnel intercepted him as he pushed through the checkpoint.
The mayor said one Secret Service agent was injured and taken to a local hospital. The suspect was also transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
“We do know that law enforcement exchanged gunfire with the individual … The suspect in this case, he was not struck by gunfire,” Mr Carroll said.
“Law enforcement … they actually tackled him into the ground and handcuffed him.”
At around 9.17pm (2.17am Irish time), Mr Trump issued his first remarks after the shooting, saying law enforcement “acted quickly and bravely.”
In a post on Truth Social, Mr Trump said “the shooter has been apprehended.” He added that he recommended the event should continue.
Roughly 20 minutes later, Mr Trump posted again, saying law enforcement had asked him and others to leave the venue and that he was complying. The event would be rescheduled “within 30 days,” he said.
At about 10.30pm (3.30am Irish time), Mr Trump spoke to reporters during a press conference at the White House alongside the director of the FBI and the acting US attorney general.
Mr Trump and other law enforcement officials said early information indicated the suspect was a lone shooter.
At around 11.13pm (4.13am Irish time), Jeanine Pirro, the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, said the suspect was being charged with using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
