In a landmark ruling, Valencia supporters received an eight-month jail sentence for racially abusing Vinicius Junior.

This ruling marks the first time individuals in Spain have been convicted for racial taunts within football arenas. Banned from stadium entry for two years, the offenders were caught disparaging Vinicius during a match at Mestalla stadium in May 2023.

LaLiga’s chief, Javier Tebas, hailed the verdict. “This verdict marks a milestone in our combat against racism,” he proclaimed.

Tebas also emphasized the verdict’s dual role in mending Vinicius’s wounds and setting a stern precedent. He noted, “It sends a stern warning to perpetrators of such hate at football venues that there will be serious repercussions.”

LaLiga has documented 16 racist episodes targeting Vinicius in recent seasons. Visibly moved, the Brazilian striker called for stringent measures from Spanish officials earlier in March, underscoring his diminished zest and drive stemming from ongoing maltreatment.
