Toronto FC vs. Chicago Fire: Johnson Thrilled to Extend His Tenure with the Reds

Sean Johnson won’t hit the pitch for Toronto FC in their upcoming skirmish against Chicago Fire this Saturday. However, he’s just inked a new deal with the Reds.

Thrilled to prolong his stint at Toronto FC, Johnson looks forward to continued successes with the club after locking down a new agreement.

The stalwart netminder joined the Reds in early 2023, transferring from New York City FC and was recently selected for the U.S. team for the Copa America.

Despite a rough previous season, Toronto currently finds themselves in the decent spot, sixth in the Eastern Conference, boasting 24 points after playing 17 matches in 2024.

Within his 12 MLS matches this year, Johnson has maintained four clean sheets. His sterling performances have earned him a contract extension valid through the end of 2026.

Before clashing with the Chicago Fire, Johnson expressed his enthusiasm in club communications: “The fans have embraced me warmly since my arrival. I’m all in for carving more exhilarating chapters here at TFC,” he remarked.

Jason Hernandez, Toronto’s general manager, shared, “We’re over the moon as Sean commits further to our club. His role is pivotal in both our present ventures and future aspirations. With Sean’s guidance, we aim to exceed our ambitions for 2024 and beyond.”

For Chicago Fire, it’s Hugo Cuypers

Cuypers was instrumental in the Fire’s recent victory over the Galaxy, marking his third consecutive match with a goal involvement—a feat not seen since Robert Beric in late 2020.

GAME OUTLOOK: TORONTO ANTICIPATED TO TRIUMPH

After snapping a nine-game stint without a win, Chicago managed a 2-1 victory at home against LA Galaxy on June 1. This marked their first match netting more than one goal since a previous win back in early April.

Toronto has been on a goal spree, netting 33 in their last 11 outings across all competitions. This follows a drier spell where they accumulated just 32 goals over 43 matches starting March 2023.

Toronto has managed to remain unbeaten in their past 12 home encounters with Chicago, the longest home unbeaten streak against any team in their MLS tenure.
