Pedri Shatters Ronaldo’s Record for Most Appearances in Major Tournaments

During Spain’s Euro 2024 clash with Georgia, Pedri smashed a record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo.

At a mere 21 years and 218 days old, Pedri featured in his 13th major international match. This milestone was marked during Spain’s knockout game.

This appearance was his fourth in the Euro knockout stages as a 21-year-old or younger, setting a new benchmark.

Previously, Ronaldo had amassed 12 appearances before hitting 22 during the 2004 Euro and the 2006 World Cup.

Pedri first donned Spain’s colors as an 18-year-old in March 2021. His standout performances propelled Spain to the semi-finals of the delayed Euro 2020, where they lost in penalties to Italy, the eventual champions.

For his efforts, he bagged the UEFA Young Player of the Tournament, dominating with the most passes in the opposition’s half.

Only a few players surpassed his record for creating chances from open play.

Pedri was a fixture in Spain’s starting lineup throughout Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, where he ranked notably high for his passing despite Spain’s early exit.

This year, his prowess on the field continued, leading his team in creating opportunities and executing an assist in their solid victory against Croatia.

While Pedri has made considerable strides, Ronaldo’s early exploits remain iconic.

Ronaldo scored crucial goals and provided key assists both at Euro 2004 and during Portugal’s impressive run at the 2006 World Cup.

Josko Gvardiol of Manchester City had racked up 11 major appearances for Croatia by his 22nd birthday, almost catching Ronaldo.

England’s Jude Bellingham, equalling Pedri’s latest tally on the same day, poses a threat to his record.

Bellingham, not 22 until next June, could surpass Pedri depending on the outcomes of their respective teams in the tournament.

With his decisive goal for England against Serbia, Bellingham joined an elite group, appearing in three major tournaments before age 21.

He also became one of the young few to score in both the Euros and the World Cup, following Michael Owen’s lead.
