Panama Triumphs 2-1 Over USA: Host’s Lapses and Pepi’s Missed Chances Spell Defeat at Copa America

In a gripping Copa America showdown, Panama edged past the United States 2-1 last Thursday.

The match kicked off in chaotic fashion, laying the groundwork for an intense duel with each side having a man sent off.

The USA’s eventful first 26 minutes in Atlanta included a disallowed goal, Timothy Weah’s expulsion, and a spectacular goal by Folarin Balogun, quickly countered by Cesar Blackman’s equalizer.

As the game appeared to be heading for a stalemate, Ricardo Pepi’s missed opportunities led to a tumultuous ending. Jose Fajardo scored in the 83rd minute while Panama managed to secure the win despite Adalberto Carrasquilla receiving a red card.

This result drew Panama level with the Copa America hosts at three points each, placing the U.S. in a dicey situation before their decisive clash against Uruguay.

An initially stunned local crowd nearly witnessed Yoel Barcenas score with a breathtaking bicycle kick in the very opening moments. However, elation followed when Weston McKennie’s strike was initially celebrated but then nullified after an extended VAR check confirmed Tim Ream was offside.

The States faced more VAR despair as Weah had his yellow card escalated to a red for striking Amir Murillo.

Joy erupted in the 22nd minute when Balogun blasted in a goal from the box’s edge, only for Blackman to restore balance four minutes later.

Luck was on the USA’s side when a controversial penalty against them was overturned just after the hour mark.

After Balogun nearly doubled his tally, Pepi’s replacement missed a pivotal chance. Fajardo seized the moment and scored, sealing Panama’s hard-fought win even after Carrasquilla’s ejection.

Pepi under scrutiny

Despite fewer minutes as a sub, Pepi’s inability to score was notable. His expected goals topped the charts, starkly contrasting with other top scorers of the tournament.

While McKennie set him up beautifully, the PSV striker failed to deliver. Balogun, however, excelled, netting a crucial goal, boosting the team’s chances for the upcoming games.

Panama earns their stripes

Building on their penalty shootout victory over the USA in last year’s Gold Cup, Panama secured a meritorious win within the regulation 90 this time.

Despite the USA maintaining a scoring streak against Panama, the visitors showcased superior finishing skills crucial for the win. With 19 fouls to the USA’s four, Panama’s rough play might be contentious, yet it strategically positioned them for potential advancement.
