Germany Secures Last-16 Berth with a Convincing 2-0 Victory Over Hungary: Musiala and Gundogan Shine

Germany clinched their slot in the last 16 at Euro 2024, dispatching Hungary with a 2-0 victory, solidifying two triumphs in their first two matches.

Following a 5-1 domination of Scotland, Germany faced heightened intensity from Hungary, which sought redemption after a loss to Switzerland.

In Stuttgart, amid an anxious crowd, Hungary missed several prime scoring opportunities. Musiala and Gundogan struck goals before and after the break.

Julian Nagelsmann’s squad confirmed their spot in the knockout stages. They aim to top Group A against Switzerland this Sunday.

Meanwhile, Hungary’s best shot at advancing is to become one of the top third-placers, squaring off against Scotland next.

The match kicked off with Manuel Neuer thwarting Roland Sallai’s attempt, pushing back initial weak German defenses.

Domination soon tipped to Germany. Gundogan nudged Orban, setting up Musiala who fired past Peter Gulacsi after 22 minutes. Neuer stayed sharp against Szoboszlai’s free-kick and a critical header at halftime.

Hungary’s Sallai had a goal disallowed for offside. He and his team squandered another key chance at the 60-minute mark through Barnabas Varga’s misdirected header.

Germany widened the gap when Gundogan netted Mittelstadt’s setup. Neuer fumbled a cross late in the game, but Joshua Kimmich cleared the shot off the line, securing the clean sheet.

Musiala Steals the Show

Musiala, having netted a scorcher against Scotland, opened scoring again for Germany. With his standout performances, the young star is proving essential.

At just over 21 years old, he’s set new records for prodigious talent at the Euros.

He’s now among the youngest to score in his first two starts at the European Championships, trailing only Ferenc Bene from Euro 1964.

Musiala also set a record as the youngest to score in the initial two games of any Euro tournament.

Hungary’s Valiant Effort

Albeit Germany routed Scotland without facing a single shot, Hungary posed a real threat. They notched seven shots in the first half alone, the most Germany has seen in a half at the Euros since 2008.

Sallai’s early missed effort could have been historic, ranking high on the instant goal tally at European Championships.

Despite their aggressive start and multiple shots, Hungary’s finishing faltered, and Germany capitalized post-break to secure the win.
