De la Fuente Praises Spain’s Squad as Supreme Global Contenders Following Victory Over Italy

Under the keen stewardship of Luis de la Fuente, Spain has soared to the zenith of their group at Euro 2024 by capably dispatching Italy.

Despite daunting anticipation about their group’s level of challenge, Spain swiftly dismantled mighty opponents; a dominant 3-0 victory over Croatia was followed by a tight 1-0 win against Italy this Thursday.

Securing the summit of Group B with a match yet to be played, a self-inflicted goal by Riccardo Calafiori nudged Spain past the current champions.

In their recent clash in Gelsenkirchen, Spain unleashed 20 shots, generating 1.9 expected goals (xG), significantly overshadowing Italy’s modest four attempts and 0.18 xG. They also held 57.2% of game possession.

This marked the second occasion where La Roja has commenced a European Championship with successive clean-sheet wins since 2016, after defeating Czechia and Turkiye.

Dynamic performances from Nico Williams, Lamine Yamal, and Pedri have fortified De la Fuente’s belief that he helms the tournament’s most gifted contingent.

“It’s about understanding the nuances of each game,” De la Fuente remarked in his latest media briefing. “Winning titles certainly cements that proficiency.”

“However, let’s spotlight the caliber of this current cohort. These Spanish players reign supreme globally.”

With the freedom to rest key players against Albania in their final group game, De la Fuente persists in advocating vigilance and humility as they approach the last 16.

“Our football prowess was omnipresent; it might have made Italy seem off their game. Remember, they clinched the Euros just three years back. We have notched some pivotal wins and hold promising potential,” he pointed out.

“Yet, the beautiful game is often unforgiving. Caution, humility, and respect are paramount as we progress,” De la Fuente concluded.
