UN Warns of Evolving Terror Threats, Emphasizes Need for Global Cooperation

Terrorism is undergoing a transformation amid ongoing global conflicts, most notably in Africa. This critical issue took center stage during the UN’s Fourth Counter-Terrorism Week, which drew an impressive crowd of over 1,000 participants from 119 nations.

This comprehensive gathering featured delegates from various governmental bodies, regional organizations, and civil society groups, all uniting to discuss the evolving tactics employed by terrorist entities like Al-Qaeda and their affiliates. These groups have become increasingly adept, leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and facing new cybersecurity challenges.

“They exploit instability, governance shortfalls, socioeconomic disparities, and technological advancements to broaden their influence, attract recruits, and secure resources,” stated Alexandre Zouev, the UN Acting Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism.

The 2026 Global Terrorism Index has identified the Sahel region of Sub-Saharan Africa as the world’s foremost hub of terrorism, emphasizing the immediate need to address this pressing threat.
