DR Congo files case against Rwanda at International Court over conflict

Rebels Consent to Exit Vital Uvira City in DR Congo

In a sharp escalation of a long-simmering dispute, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has taken Rwanda to the International Court of Justice.

Kinshasa accuses its neighbour of breaching multiple international treaties, alleging that Rwandan troops have operated on Congolese soil and that Kigali has supported armed groups in the country’s east. The filing asks the court to order an immediate end to the purported violations and to compel Rwanda to pay reparations to victims.

Rwanda, which has repeatedly rejected claims that it backs the M23 rebel movement, has yet to comment on the latest case.

The move lands despite a US-brokered peace accord between the two states, as fierce fighting persists in eastern DR Congo.
