as reported from Accra, Marine Jeannin

After the battle with words, the dispute over numbers. In the aftermath of the announcement of his rival victory, incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo, opposition candidate John Mahama described as “fraudulent” the official results announced by the election commission. He promised to take “all legitimate measures to reverse this injustice”.

On Sunday, his party, the NDC, gave a press conference that would expose the election commission’s mistakes. According to her estimates, Nana Akufo-Addo would run in the presidential election, but with only 49.62% of the vote. Which would mean holding a second round between the outgoing president and John Mahama.

The protest also concerns the legislative election. According to preliminary results released by the Electoral Commission, the presidential party would have won 137 seats in parliament, while the NDC would have won 136. But according to the opposition party’s calculations, the NDC would have actually won 140 seats, or the majority in parliament.

For its part, the Electoral Commission acknowledged that it had made mistakes in its calculations, but confirmed that this did not change the outcome of the presidential or legislative elections. Local and international observers validated the election commission’s findings, but regretted that the process was “less transparent” than usual.
