opposition calls for “opening of a civilian transition”

The day after the presidential election in Côte d’Ivoire, the opposition announced that it did not recognize this election and noted the end of President Ouattara’s mandate.

as reported from Abidjan, François Hume-Ferkatadji

Prior to the announcement of the partial results, which were to be published in the coming hours, the porter of the opposition coalition, Pascal Affi N’Guessan, read a statement in front of a swarm of national and international journalists from the residence of the president of the PDCI, Henri Konan Bédié. In addition to Affi N’Guessan, other party presidents, in particular Albert Mabri Toikeusse, whose candidacy portfolio was deemed inadmissible by the Constitutional Council. On the other hand, Henri Konan Bédié did not take part in the reading of the press release. However, reporters saw him waving his hand a few minutes earlier.

Not surprisingly, the opposition announces that it does not “recognize the presidential election”, therefore “notes the end of President Ouattara’s mandate” and “calls for the opening of a civilian transition to create conditions for a fair and transparent presidential election”.

Continued political blockade

Through the voice of Pascal Affi N’Guessan, the opposition also called for “general mobilization” to “block the dictatorship of President Alassane Ouattara” without, however, providing more information or details about the terms of this mobilization. Political blockade is therefore far from resolved despite the great unrest that shook the country on Saturday. The opposition now apologizes to the victims of 30 people for the only day yesterday. For its part, the government has so far not given any official record.

The opposition put forward other figures: in particular the participation rate, which it estimates at less than 10%.
