Sudan Probes Alleged Deadly Egyptian Raids on Miners

Egyptian forces arrested 67 Sudanese miners and injured three others during a raid near the Sudan-Egypt border, the Sudanese human rights group Darfur Victims Advocacy reported, saying the operation unfolded after a large convoy of roughly 60 military vehicles encircled mining sites and opened fire before making the detentions.

Witnesses and survivors told the rights organization that Egyptian aircraft also struck the mining encampments, killing dozens of miners and wounding many more. The group added that Sudanese military intelligence later summoned seven miners and ordered them to delete all photographs and videos documenting the incident.

Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, president of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, visited the area and said authorities have launched an active investigation into the events.
