Khalifa Haftar’s response to the Algerian president
The National Unity Government unilaterally announced the opening of the coastal road between Sirte and Misrata, a road that is still closed alongside Khalifa Haftar’s forces, the latter leading the largest military operation since October last year, and I followed a peace agreement. He has just declared that he has closed the border with Algeria. Khalifa Haftar is thus sending several messages to the international community, and in particular to Algeria.
It is in the name of the fight against terrorism in southern Libya that Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s forces have advanced towards the border area with Algeria near the city of Ghat in the southwest of the country. They announced the closure of Aysin’s pedestrian crossing, but this point had already been closed for several years. They declared it a “forbidden and closed military zone”.
Since his appointment, the Libyan leadership in Tripoli has led discussions with Algiers to launch this section, which is useful for trade between the two countries, and these discussions went well. However, Khalifa Haftar’s forces, say sources in Ghat, are far from controlling the long borders between the two countries, which are used by traffickers and terrorists of all nationalities.
The Berlin Conference
This initiative comes about ten days after statements by President Abdelmadjid Tbboune that were received very poorly in Benghazi. The Algerian head of state then declared that at the worst of the time in the Battle of Tripoli, Algiers had not ruled out military intervention to counter the offensive of Marshal Haftar and his Russian allies.
Today, Khalifa Haftar also seems to want to remind the international community, ahead of the new Berlin conference on the Libyan crisis, of his desire to influence the political scene in the new Libya. He defies the temporary authorities in Tripoli with the support of the Community. international.
