A devastating fire swept through an orphanage in Algiers’ Mohammadia district, killing at least 11 people — most of them children — and injuring 19 others.
Authorities said 10 of those hurt sustained burns of varying severity, while emergency crews safely evacuated five people with disabilities. Investigators have yet to determine what sparked the blaze. The disaster struck as Algeria endures an intense heatwave and battles hundreds of wildfires nationwide.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune offered his condolences to the families of the victims.
