The initiative is intended to speed up Rwanda’s transit logistics through the Port of Dar es Salaam, a lifeline that handles about 70% of the landlocked country’s imports and exports—some 1.6 million tonnes of cargo each year. President Samia said Tanzania is ready to deepen relations by dismantling remaining economic barriers and building on decades of close partnership and good neighbourliness.

Kagame has described relations between Rwanda and Tanzania as “brotherly,” and reaffirmed a commitment to strengthen collaboration across trade, investment, and infrastructure. In recent years, the two nations have stepped up efforts on trade and regional integration, with Tanzania serving as Rwanda’s key gateway for imports and exports through the Port of Dar es Salaam.
