Somalia’s Military Intensifies Attack on Al-Shabaab in Remote Regions

Somalia: SNA Expands Offensive Against Al-Shabaab in Rural Areas

In Mogadishu, Somalia, the Somali National Army (SNA) has broadened its campaign against al-Shabaab rebels in central regions as part of ongoing efforts to eradicate the group, which has caused chaos in the region for over 16 years.

Recent reports indicate that the military has been stationed in Middle Shabelle for several months, actively pursuing Al-Shabaab in various secret locations where they launch their attacks. The militant group still retains control in parts of central and southern Somalia.

Key military leaders involved in the operation revealed that SNA forces have targeted Al-Shabaab strongholds in Eelbaad and Ruunirgood. This follows the successful completion of the initial phase of operations against the group.

Additionally, the military has expanded its operations in Eeldheer and Mesagawey, as well as other areas such as Shan-Dhagood, Saqeer Nab, Macalin Abukar, and Hussein Cagey. The aim is to secure strategic locations before the withdrawal of foreign forces from the country.

Plans are in place to extend the operation to eliminate the militants from areas like Galcad, Elbur, and Galhareeri. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has vowed to defeat Al-Shabaab and has called for support from the international community. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and US Africa Command are also involved in the pursuit of Al-Shabaab.

With 5000 ATMIS soldiers already departed and another 5000 on track to leave by the end of June, the Somali National Army is expected to take over security responsibilities by the end of the year as part of the Somali Transition Plan (STP).

In addition to military actions, the government is targeting those who provide financial support to Al-Shabaab. Social media platforms used by the group for propaganda purposes have also been shut down by the government.
