Somalia’s Bilan News Triumphs with 2024 One World Media Press Freedom Honor

Bilan kicked off by the UN Development Programme in ’21, has bagged EU cash since ’24. Nestled in Somalia, a perilous spot for scribes, they’ve become paragons of gritty, untarnished reporting.

“The Bilan squad is bridging gaps with locals, uncovering untold stories, and boldly keeping folks in the loop,” said Achim Steiner from UNDP. “By narrating Somalia’s pivotal tales and staying true to facts, they show how women must help craft the country’s new saga.”

Bilan’s editorial autonomy lets them tackle pivotal matters head-on. They’ve spotlighted bias against albino folks, HIV-positive Somalis’ woes, female orphans’ mistreatment, autistic kids’ schooling struggles, and a surge in opiate use among Mogadishu women. Plus, they’ve shone a light on women’s triumphs in politics, business, and other arenas traditionally dominated by men.

“This accolade is a mighty nod to Bilan’s stellar efforts,” said Karin Johannson, EU Ambassador to Somalia. “Their riveting stories narrate Somalia’s journey from turmoil to a hopeful horizon.”

Bilan’s narratives capture millions across Somalia through Dalsan Media Group’s radio, TV, and social channels, headquartered in Mogadishu. Globally, their voices echo in the Guardian, BBC, and El País, proving Somali women journalists can compete globally despite facing discrimination and peril.
