Rwanda’s teenage pregnancy rate rose to 8% in 2025 from 5% in 2020, according to the Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey, prompting warnings from health authorities about school dropouts, maternal health risks and reduced economic prospects for girls.

Health authorities in Rwanda warned that the rising rate of teenage pregnancy is contributing to students leaving school, increased maternal health risks and limited economic opportunities for young women.

The Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey reported that prevalence increased from 5% in 2020 to 8% in 2025. The report attributed the rise to several factors, including insufficient comprehensive sexual education because of cultural taboos.

According to the survey, the likelihood of pregnancy climbs sharply with age, from under 1% at 15 to nearly 20% by 19. Researchers said the figures carry broader consequences beyond the numbers.

They reflect interrupted education, heightened health risks, and constrained life opportunities for thousands of girls.

Calls for action

Activists called for stronger community-based prevention strategies and better access to youth-friendly health and support services.
