General Mahamat, Deby’s son named Chad’s interim head of state
The Chadian army has confirmed that General Mahamat Kaka, the son of the late President Idriss Deby Itno, will replace him as head of a military council to replace the late president.
This follows the message from Army spokesman General Azem Bermandoa Agouna, who said Idriss Deby, 68, “has just breathed his last defender of the sovereign nation on the battlefield” over the weekend.
Mahamat previously served as deputy commander of the armed forces for the Chadian intervention in northern Mali (FATIM).
Mahamat first joined the joint grouping of military schools in Chad. He subsequently received training in France at the military school in Aix-en-Provence.
Upon his return, he was enrolled in the second promotion of semi-direct to the School of Officers’ Interarmes and was later appointed to the Service Branch of State Institution Security (SERS) as Deputy Commander of the Infantry Group.
His first combat experience took place in April 2006, when rebels attacked the capital Chad and later took part in fighting in eastern Chad along with General Abu Bakr al Said, director of the gendarmerie, Mahmud then gained the rank of major afterwards.
Mahamat led forces as he took command of the Chadian forces during the Battle of Am Dam, where his army defeated the rebels.
