Qatar Urges Increased Global Developmental Aid for Somalia

Qatar has urged the global community to ramp up support in humanitarian and developmental aid, along with technical help, to bolster the efforts aimed at enhancing human rights capabilities in Somalia. The call emphasizes fulfilling both domestic and international commitments aligned with Somali priorities.

These sentiments were shared by Turki Mohammed Abdullah al-Khalifa, the Third Secretary from the African Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He spoke during an interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on the human rights situation in Somalia, part of the 57th session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva.

Al-Khalifa applauded Somalia’s government for strides made in boosting the nation’s humanitarian, economic, and social landscapes. Despite grappling with terrorism, climate shifts, droughts, flooding, and food scarcity, progress is visible.

He specifically commended the launch of a national reconciliation framework, Somalia joining the UN Convention against Corruption, and activities advancing the rights of women, children, and those with disabilities.

Highlighting Qatar’s commitment, he spoke of various aid forms provided to Somalia, mentioning signed agreements aimed at elevating education and health sectors. Additionally, these agreements support strategic development projects, enhance disaster management, bolster security and stability, and rehabilitate government institutions and facilities.
