North Western State of Somalia Legislator Alleges Government Detentions Aimed at Election Interference

Hargeisa (AX) – Mohamed Abib Yusuf, a lawmaker from North Western State of Somalia, has leveled accusations against the North Western State of Somalia authorities, alleging they detained him to spark turmoil in the Awdal area, aiming to derail upcoming elections and extend their political tenure.

Upon his release from Mandera prison, the outspoken MP shared his perspective with the press on Monday. He contended that his arrest was baseless, serving as a means to postpone elections and breed discord in Awdal.

“The government had grand schemes behind my arrest,” he remarked. “Their intent was to stir up trouble in Awdal, akin to the strife in Las Anod. Their agenda was to postpone the election and plunge my home region into chaos.”

Despite the administration’s pressure, Abib stood firm in his convictions. “I’m willing to lay down my life for my beliefs, but taking another’s life isn’t my way,” he declared. He extended his gratitude to the people of Awdal for their unwavering support and composure during his confinement.

MP Abib faced a 30-day imprisonment over treason charges, which were ultimately overturned by the High Court, resulting in his freedom last week.
