Tunisia’s Upcoming Presidential Elections Set for October 6

Tunisia’s president has officially announced that the nation will hold presidential elections on October 6, as detailed in a statement released late Tuesday night.

This succinct announcement revealed that President Kais Saied “has issued a writ for the presidential elections to take place on Sunday, October 6, 2024.”

Speculation surrounds Saied’s intentions to seek a second term following his initial five-year victory in 2019.

Back in April, the National Salvation Front, which serves as the principal opposition coalition in Tunisia, declared it would abstain from the upcoming elections. They cited both a lack of fair competition conditions and the imprisonment of political adversaries as their reasons.

The opposition coalition previously boycotted the December 2022 parliamentary elections, along with local municipal elections staged earlier this year.

Tunisia has been navigating a severe political quagmire since 2021, a situation exacerbated by Saied’s abrupt dismissal of the government and the disbandment of parliament.
