News from Liverpool: Leighton Clarkson joins Blackburn

Liverpool’s young Leighton Clarkson has gone to Blackburn Rovers on loan until the end of the season.

Clarkson is highly rated and will make his red debut in the EFL Cup quarter-final against Aston Villa in December 2019, before continuing to earn his first start in the FA Cup later this season.

The 19-year-old midfielder played regularly for Liverpool during the 23-year-old last season, made 14 appearances in Premier League 2 and recorded three goals and three assists. He was rewarded for his fine form by getting a start in Liverpool’s group game in the Champions League against FC Midtjylland in December last year.

A move to Blackburn is a natural next step in his development and Clarkson will be particularly excited about the deal as he is a boyfriend of Rover’s fan. He spent his first years at the club’s youth academy before being picked up by Liverpool at the age of nine.

Clarkson will be Rover’s first signing of the summer but it is unlikely he will be the last. Blackburn recently lost last season’s goal scorer Adam Armstrong to Southampton and they are expected to sign a replacement striker before the transfer window closes. They were linked to Saints striker Michael Obafemi on loan earlier in the window.

At the same time, Liverpool will also say goodbye to Ben Davies. Davies arrived at the club on the last day of the transfer date in January last year, but has not yet played for the first team. According to Sky Sports, Davies underwent a doctor’s examination on Monday before a loan transfer to Sheffield United.

Davies has a good Championship pedigree, impressive for Preston North End before he got his shock transfer to Liverpool. He would be Blade’s first signing of the transfer window.

90min understands that the new coach Slavisa Jokanovic has been told that he must sell players before he takes in permanent transfers. However, he may soon have money to play with, but Arsenal are closing in on a move for Aaron Ramsdale.
