Rebels seize the city of Ethiopia's Tigray in the middle of

Rebel forces have captured a major city in Tigray after launching a new offensive in northern Ethiopia’s conflict-ridden region, a spokesman said on Tuesday.

The allegations come two weeks after the Ethiopian government declared a unilateral ceasefire in the face of major advances from Tigray’s defense force.

“Yesterday we launched an offensive in the (southern region) of Raya and were able to completely eradicate the Federal Armed Forces and the Amhara Special Forces,” Getachew Reda, a spokesman for the Tigrayan rebels, told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

“We have been able to secure most of southern Tigray, including Korem and Alamata (the largest city in the area).”

He said fighting was also taking place in western Tigray.

The allegations could not be independently confirmed and an Ethiopian military spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
